"Elnod held Westone, in Langtrew Hundred, in the reign of Edward the Confessor It was granted to James Basset in the reign of Queen Mary, and afterwards, to Arthur Basset in the years of Queen Elizabeth.

The manor afterwards came to the Crewes, who were a branch of the fmaily of Cheshire. The heiress of the Crewes was married to Sir Richard Holford, and it thence came into the possession of his descendant, Robert Stayner Holford, by whom the present mansion was erected, from the designs of the architect Lewis Vuillany."
