Merevale Hall

near Atherstone, Warwickshire - Dugdale family

"Merevale Hall, near Atherstone, stands on the borders of Warwickshire and Leicestershire, about a mile distant from the town. It is finely situated on the edge of a wooded eminence. The present house was built in 1840, by the celebrated architect Blore, on the site of a former mansion of brick. The style is florid Elizabethan, and the south-east front is considered one of the architect's masterpieces.

Sir William Dugdale was a celebrated antiquary and genealogist. His grandson, William Dugdale, of Blythe Hall, left a daughter, Jane, who married Richard Geast. Richard, their son married, in 1767, Penelope Bate, eldest daughter and heiress of Francis Stratford, of Merevale. He assumed the surname and arms of Dugdale, and had a son, Dugdale Stratford Dugdale, who was MP for Warwickshire from 1802 to 1830."
