Wimpole Hall

near Royston, Cambridgeshire - Earl of Hardwicke

"This has been described as the most splendid seat in the county of Cambridge. It is a brick mansion of spacious extent, flanked on the eastern side by outbuildings, and on the west by a large greenhouse.

The family of Lord Hardwicke is derived from Simon Yorke, of Dover, a merchant who died in 1682. His grandson, Philip Yorke, was Lord Chief Justice in 1733, and created Baron Hardwicke in the same year. He was further raised in the Peerage in 1754 to the Viscountcy of Royston and Earldom of Hardwicke."
